Mother’s day. Another western custom that has slowly filtered through into the more conservative eastern culture. Growing up in a Muslim Indian home with relatively strong traditional and Islamic values, we really never celebrated Mother’s day. While the message of the day is to show love and appreciation for our mothers, I grew up with my mother firmly saying that we should be showing love and appreciation for all important people in our lives every day and not just on a randomly selected day each year.

With that in mind, I thought back to my early childhood days and wondered back on lessons from Islamic classes (aka Madressa). I was looking for guidelines on how to show appreciation and who to show it to and for some reason the only one hundred percent clear lesson was the words of Prophet Muhammed (P.B.U.H), “Paradise lies under the feet of your mother.”

And as the words rang through my mind, I found myself wondering how many stories the feet of our mothers had to tell. With the help of one of my best friends, I set out to discover the world under the feet of mothers around me and as I delved into unknown depths I discovered striking, strong women and the people they helped mould.

Before I could delve into the beautiful stories that awaited, I decided to first define the word mother but alas the definition I found was lacking in variety.

According to thefreedictionary.com  :

mother
ˈmʌðə/
noun
noun: mother; plural noun: mothers; noun: Mother; noun: Reverend Superior
  1. 1.
a woman in relation to a child or children to whom she has given birth.

But I can not accept this definition, for as you will see below there is so much more to being the mother of a child than simply being the person who gives birth to the child. Below I will show how I came to realise that these strong and nurturing women are qualified doctors, lawyers, teachers and shoulder-to-cry ons. They are more than just the women who survived 57 Dels of pain to deliver a beautiful tiny creature (which for random interest sake is the same as breaking 20 bones at once). No, this woman is a warrior, a protector and a spoon weilding terror (if you grew up Indian, the spoon was often replaced by slipper or rolling pin depending on how badly misbehaved you were).

By now, I can practically see your eyes rolling at how corny this all sounds so instead of rambling on and on, let’s get to the interesting bit. Let me introduce you to the amazing gems we discovered:

In no particular order, except that I’m starting with my mum first (because as we’ve already established she’s probably reading this before anyone else), ladies and gentleman I present to you :

My Mother:

Mum, I’ve always known you to opt for the strangest pair of comfy yet fancy shoes you can find. As your oldest daughter and the only one likely to fit into your shoes, mostly because I inherited your teeny tiny feet, I’ve always wondered why on earth you chose such strange foot wear. Why not simply opt for higher heels and fancier flats. That is until I fully considered the need for comfy shoes when you have to juggle work, four girls and the weekly grocery shopping all in one day. I will probably not fully understand this craziness you call every day routine until I myself am a mother but from where I stand currently this makes you a hero to me.

Not only are you a mother but you are also a grandmother and consistent reminder to remember God (Allah) and thank him for all we have. Your faith is a light to all but what truly amazes me is how beautiful you remain regardless of how time has tried to tear you apart. Here you sit, smiling as you whisper your prayers looking at least ten years younger than you actually are belying the hardships you have successfully conquered. You are the true definition of a warrior in my mind.

Today, you sat with your finger wrapped in a tiny fist and somewhere in the back of your mind you realized your whole world now revolved around protecting and guiding this miracle in your lap. Today you have fulfilled your role as a safe haven and protector. Today you became this tiny angels first and purest love.

About you, I have heard a million things. I wish I could say I knew you in person but since I cannot I will say that some day I hope that I am privileged enough to spend time with the woman who molded some of the most amazing characters I have ever come across. From what I hear, your life has in no way been simple and yet I’ve heard your laughter brings a glow to a room and your smile (if what I’ve heard is correct) is completely and utterly unique. I imagine you have the kind of mischievous sparkle in your eye that makes you the most delightful friend to your children and everyone else who is lucky enough to come into contact with you. You are the bringer of joy.

From the day I was born to this day right here you have always been a giant part of my life. Thinking back you have always been much more than just my aunt. You were my mini mummy (even if my mummy is half your height) . From you I learnt many important lessons and gained a wealth of knowledge. Now you have your own bundle of joy and light. A miracle made specially for you. And  I hope that some day I may give her a small fraction of the amazing love you gave to me. You are the person I look to as a guide and calm adviser.

You nurtured and brought three beautiful, strong kids into the world almost completely alone. You groomed them into adults and taught them to be self sufficient, helpful members of society. To me, you are my support and the source of immense, unending love. A gypsy at heart and a soul that belongs at the seaside where it can wonder freely far from the harshness of reality; You are my inspiration.
Miss you
For this special picture, I allowed the owner to write her own caption as this is too beautiful for me to take that away from her:                                                        My dearest Grandmother:  You were my mother, my friend, my warmth, my light. You were my everything. Your kindness radiated from your soul and you loved without reservation. I know that you are in a special, blissful and blessed place and that you will be rewarded for your goodness. May you be raised to the highest stages of paradise. I miss you. I love you. I appreciate every tiny nuance of love you’ve given me. I may not be able to thank you in person any more but my prayers will always include you.

To the strongest, most resilient woman I know. I’ve watched you yell at nurses for letting me cry and felt your tight hugs when I fell to tears. I’ve seen you nurture weak, freezing kittens to health and cuddle up with my cousins on cold winter days. Never have I seen you back down simply because illness grips you. You always charge ahead. Protecting those you love and I’ve witnessed first hand as you stand up for what is right. Often some are offended and some just plain shocked but I am always in awe at how easily you assume your role of Truth Bearer and Pain Soother.

Now, after meeting these gorgeous and amazing women you see why I cannot simply accept a mediocre definition that a mother is simply someone who bares a child. For clearly, she has the role of a thousand people and yet she wears just one pair of shoes at a time. It’s no wonder paradise lies at her feet.
