Byron Katie once said “Everyone in your life is a figment of your imagination… even you.”

Naturally, as one of those people who question for the sake of inciting a reaction that would be sufficiently intriguing and captivate my pea-sized attention span for a while, I was recently obliged to pose the question: “What exactly is reality? Is life really what it seems?”

Dreams and Reality

According to a loosely adapted definition, reality is a state of things in the form they actually exist, rather than the form they are imagined or envisioned as. But what exactly defines such a state? For reality is merely a conjecture… Which means, in theory, there is no proof that what we refer to as reality is in fact actually the state they exist in but merely the mainstream-accepted perception of their existence as governed by societal norms.

So, as usual, I will play devil’s advocate…

But first, so that my dear mother who will read this because she is ultra supportive does not keel over and think I’ve sold my soul to the devil, I wish to clear a few things up. I believe in a God. One God who in his almighty power created the worlds and it’s contents and gave man the power to think and function. A god who created life in many forms including those forms that remain hidden to our eyes.

With that in mind, I continue with the topic at hand. Is life as we know it really reality? Or, are we merely souls controlled by a greater purpose or being, in a dream or simply residing in an alternate universe, all the while believing we are living and breathing members of reality?

Does reality actually exist? Or are we simply so used to labeling any thing extraordinary as unrealistic that we’ve taken our magical incomprehensible existence  and built the illusion of reality around it to reassure ourselves that such a thing exists?

Just take a minute to imagine, to think, to ponder…
All the things you’ve said, all the people you’ve met, all the achievements you’ve got, all the failures you’ve dealt with, all the feelings you’ve drowned in. What if it were all a dream? A sleep you’ve been sleeping and haven’t woken up from yet?  A sleep which gave you a dream of your life. A dream so real it showed you what your possible future might turn out to be right down to the tiny details of showing you the people, power, love and lust that will influence each aspect of your life.
What if one day when you die and this dream finally ends, your eyes close and you embrace that well known “bright light” associated with death… But instead your eyes open and you’re back in reality…

Imagine that.
A dream of your entire existence in just 6 hours of sleep.

What would you do?

Would you get up to meet the people you’ve met?  Would you love the ones you’ve loved? Would you do the things you did or would you leave it, discarding it as a mere dream? Would you change it all and pursue something more? Would you rebel and choose the life you want not the one expected from you?

Will it be a peek into the future, just a dream or your ultimate nightmare?

And, if it’s a peak into the future…

Were you living the dream?
