So, like everyone else, I’ve seen a million reviews and videos on this epic looking black peel off mask that supposedly does miracles for the skin. Naturally I jumped at the chance to try it out (and kick off my mask review series, even though I posting this a whole week later than expected).
I was sent a small tester size from Rubybox. On their website it says:
Wonder ingredients:
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH) is the magic in the formulation of the Pilaten Face Peel-Off Mask. This is the magic ingredient in the mask which binds it to blackheads and other skin impurities to grip them, and pull them out at the root.
Glycerol is the lubricant that allows the POVH to get thin enough to stretch across the offending areas. Glycerol also provides extra moisture as it is hygroscopic, which means that it absorbs moisture and disperses it evenly.
I also researched some more to get as much information as I could before I used the mask on my face.
According to the Pilaten website: “The Pilaten Face Mask is the latest revolution in blackhead removal from the cosmetics industry. The Pilaten Face Mask is designed to pull blackheads and other skin impurities out from the root. Able to be used daily, although we recommend weekly or bi-weekly, you can keep your skin looking fresh and clean day in and day out.”
Under the FAQ’s it also says:
“Pilaten removes all skin impurities (whiteheads/blackheads, etc). Pilaten does not help with acne as that means that there is an active infection and Pilaten cannot remove that infection. Nor will it remove acne scarring”
With these claims in mind, I followed the instructions of use and put the mask to the test.
Process of use:
- Wash the face with a cleanser to remove excess dirt from the skin.
- Then ensure the pores are open sufficiently to allow the mask to fully penetrate. Use either a hot, wet cloth over the area for about ten minutes ( an easy way to do this is to microwave a wet cloth for 15- 30 seconds) or steam your face in a bowl of hot water ( boil water and pore it into a bowl and hold your face over the bowl) or (like I did) with a facial steamer. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN WITH THE STEAM.
- Once you feel your pores are open enough, pat the area dry. Rubbing the area can cause the pores to close again so avoid rubbing the skin.
- Apply a medium layer of the mask over the entire face and apply it thicker on the outer edge so it is easier to peel.
- Allow mask to dry for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Once dry you can peel it off and complete the process. Repeat as required.
My Experience:
The application is horribly sticky and messy so I suggest using a foundation brush or an ice cream stick to smear the mask onto the skin however once the mask is on it feels quite cooling and relaxing on the skin as well as tightening. When peeling the mask off you feel the dirt being drawn out of the skin. The mask also removed some of the peach fuzz on my face making my skin feel incredibly smooth. I was pleasantly surprised by how effective the mask is. I definitely enjoyed that
I can see the results on the mask bits that were pulled off for example:
Overall:
I definitely recommend everyone to try this mask at least once. If not for the blackhead removal but for the satisfaction of peeling it up and checking the condition of your skin. My skin felt beautiful after.

If you’re interested in getting your hands on this mask there are various ways to purchase it including online or at your nearest Alpha Pharm Store.
